Save Water: Buy WEL (Water Conservation Program)
Many Australian cities face serious water shortages and long term concerns about water supply.
To help reduce urban water consumption, the Australian Government has joined with State and Territory Governments to introduce the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme.
From July 2006 a range of household products that use water (showers, taps, toilets, clothes washes and dish washers) must carry water efficiency labels and meet certain performance standards before they can be sold.
WELS will help Australians choose more water efficient products and by 2021 could help consumers save up to $600 million in domestic water and energy bills.
We worked with the Department of Heritage and Environment to tell appliance manufacturers, retailers, importers, plumbers and others about WELS and what it means for their business and customers.
Over a six week period we arranged information sessions in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney for around 500 business, government and industry representatives.
Each session provided an opportunity to learn more about this important water saving initiative before the national roll-out. The “road show” program also featured an advisory service where individual companies could meet the experts to discuss the impact of WELS on their manufacturing or retail operations.
